A Forum of the Institute of Philosophy, the London Aesthetics Forum (LAF) is an ongoing speaker series in aesthetics and the philosophy of art. Founded in 2006, the goal of the LAF is to revive philosophical activity in aesthetics within London. The LAF is generously sponsored by the British Society of Aesthetics.
To achieve this goal, the LAF has sought to raise the profile of aesthetics in the London philosophical community and actively encourage London philosophers, art theorists, artists, and musicians to work in aesthetics. The LAF has enjoyed enormous success in hosting a high-calibre programme of speakers, thereby serving as a state of the art research seminar attracting students and faculty members from all over London.
The LAF convenes roughly fortnightly, at the Institute of Philosophy in Senate House (see below for directions). Speakers are invited to talk for up to one hour, with a further hour then devoted to questions and discussion — a format that has fostered in-depth and rewarding discussions. Although primarily designed with philosophers in mind, the LAF often attracts a diverse audience, including art historians, musicologists, curators, practicing artists, and members of the general public.
The LAF is organised by a team of professional and student philosophers from the University of London:
